Discharge Prohibited

Section 51.01 of the Olivia City Code prohibits discharge of sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system.  The massive rain storms of 2016 demonstrated why the prohibition exists:  As the rain filled sump wells throughout the city and sump pumps worked overtime to try to keep up, some of those pumps were (illegally) connected to the sanitary sewer system.  The introduction of all the extra rain water into the sanitary sewer system inundated it, causing back-pressure which forced its way into people’s basements through floor drains, toilets, and sinks.  It also overwhelmed the city wastewater treatment plant.  If your had your sump pump is connected to the sanitary sewer system, please make the appropriate change at this time to help minimize the chance of a recurrence of the 2016 flooding.
