Position Title: Patrol Sergeant, Full-time

The City of Olivia, a community that strongly supports its public safety personnel, is accepting applications for a full-time patrol sergeant position. In addition to performing the duties of a patrol officer, the Patrol Sergeant serves as a role model to officers within the police department as well as to the community at large. The Patrol Sergeant ensures that patrol officers perform their duties safely and in compliance with state and federal law; as well as department policies and procedures.

The Patrol Sergeant’s duties include being responsible for coaching, mentoring, scheduling and reviewing the activities of OPD patrol officers; creating opportunities for community engagement and proactive policing; and serves as the chief law enforcement officer for the community in the absence of the police chief.

Applicants must possess considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement including evidence rules, forensic interviewing, investigative techniques, report writing and documentation; the ability to deal courtesy with the public including the ability to de-escalate situations; effective verbal and written communication skills; and have a reputation of being a team player who has a passion for working with, supporting and mentoring others.

Minimum qualifications include an associate degree in law enforcement or equivalent; five or more years of experience as a paid police officer; POST license and required first aid and standard training certifications needed upon hire. Preferred qualifications include previous supervisory experience in a law enforcement setting, and formal training and/or previous work experience in community engagement. Working knowledge of conversational Spanish is a plus.
